Aspects of Memory & FXSWorking memory is a critical aspect of reading. In particular, verbal working memory is vital in reading because it involves the ability to process and store verbal memories. Therefore when a reader encodes a sentence in a text, comprehension can be attained when they are able to store information that they are currently encoding while simultaneously integrating it with information presented earlier in the text and with relevant prior knowledge.

Attention & FXSAttention is also another important process involved in reading. In general, individuals have limited attentional capacity/working memory to process information for comprehension. Essentially, when comprehension is more automatic, resources are freed up to do more complicated comprehension processes like making inferences and integrating information. So, when reading is more effortful, there is less attentional resources available for comprehension.
